Hi All,
Hope you all are having a great week! This weekās top story was that a āsecretiveā company is using your photos to help law enforcement match your photos to your name. The company is clearview.ai. Take a look at their website and look at the facts section. This is publicly available data that they are using. While I do not agree in principle they are not doing anything wrong. We as a people need to be more careful about what we put out there
I enjoy reading David Perellās weekly read and the below two are from his weekly newsletter, Monday Musings
The first one is this life happiness curve which I found very interesting. The second one is on coffee. Dark beans have more volume and less mass. Super interesting .. and look at the photo below the tweet!Ā
With that, on to this weeks reads and I hope you all have a great week!Ā
On willpower, we all think that willpower is depletive but if we think about it instead in terms of an emotion we will be able to better control it.
This NFX article made me realize that life happens so much due to happenstance and serendipity. When we think about network effects, we donāt really think about how this affects us. People we meet, date, go out with. Can we really change a lot of these? Absolutely, but it comes down to the subconscious to make these changes
The deployment age : This article, inspired by Carlota Perezās theories speaks about the large surges of development and if the previous great surges are the same as this one we are in the Deployment Phase. What does this mean for us in technology. I think the key is innovation will be slightly reduced and current technologies will gain mass adoption. Think payments, e-commerce, medical etc. The existing technologies coupled with 5g will help spread these innovations far and wide at a (hopefully) lower cost. The opportunity now exists with scaling these technologies. When you look at venture capital now, it follows exactly that - venture capital being spread throughout the world at a faster clip than ever before. I wonder if this is still āfinancialā capital v/s āproductionā capital? Or are the two merging? As far as theories go, I loved reading this one!
Bad science - Think about how this can be used in product development. I have heard so many PMās say āthe customers want thisā when they are using themselves as a proxy for āthe customerā. Be careful and look at the data behind the cool visualizations
A decade of innovation and a decade of experiments. Our greatest decade yet! This article on the failures from the last decade was cool. As you read, pick a product and try to analyze why it failed. You will learn more about product development than just the successful ones!
Setting up your company for maximum impact
Weāve heard that the PC form factor will die for the past decade. What really happened? It didnāt die!
Human beings love secret. That is no secret. This article talks about ways in which marketers can use secrets and the power of secrets
Ray Dalio -Ā The world has gone mad. I couldn't agree more. I sometimes look at blind and look at how the valley folks talk in terms of $$ and it makes me sad. What happened to making a difference?Ā Ā
Because investors have so much money to invest and because of past success stories of stocks of revolutionary technology companies doing so well, more companies than at any time since the dot-com bubble donāt have to make profits or even have clear paths to making profits to sell their stock because they can instead sell their dreams to those investors who are flush with money and borrowing power. There is now so much money wanting to buy these dreams that in some cases venture capital investors are pushing money onto startups that donāt want more money because they already have more than enough; but the investors are threatening to harm these companies by providing enormous support to their startup competitors if they donāt take the money.
JPOP and super fans. Sheer idiocy if you ask me but as fuddy duddy what do I know about Japanese pop culture.Ā
A great read on supercharging email onboarding
The āfutureā of work : While this article is titled the future of work, it encapsulates what is wrong with work today. The problem is this āfutureā seems less and less likely as we go ahead
